Your first consultation at Law Wise is free for 15 minutes, by appointment, in every practice area. This page explains how to book a legal consultation in Mississauga, what happens when you meet with a lawyer, and what comes next if you decide to go ahead.

How a lawyer consultation works
- Tell us what happenedCall 647-948-7819 or send a message with a short description of your matter and the names of the other people involved. Leave confidential details for the meeting.
- Conflict checkBefore the lawyer discusses your matter, we check that the firm does not act for someone on the other side. The Law Society of Ontario’s rules do not allow a lawyer to act where there is a conflict of interest.
- First consultationYou meet with the lawyer for 15 minutes at no charge. The lawyer listens, asks questions, tells you whether the firm can help and outlines the next steps.
- Fees in writingIf you want us to act, we explain how the fee is worked out and confirm the arrangement with you in writing before that work starts.
- We start workWe tell you what happens next, what we need from you, and keep you informed at each stage.
What the first 15 minutes covers
The first consultation is an initial conversation. It is long enough to understand what has happened, to tell you whether this is something the firm handles, to point out any deadline you should know about, and to explain how fees would work. It is not long enough for a full legal opinion, or to read a long agreement or a court file. If your matter needs a longer meeting or a review of documents, there is a fee. The fee for a document review depends on how complex the documents are, and we tell you the amount on the spot, before the review starts.
What to have ready

You do not need every document to book a consultation. A clear account of what happened, with dates, is a good start, and the lawyer will tell you what else to collect. If you have them, these help:
- Family law: any court orders or agreements, your marriage certificate, recent tax returns and pay stubs, and a rough list of property and debts.
- Criminal defence: your release papers, any documents you were given by the police or the court, and your next court date.
- Immigration: your passport and status documents, application numbers, and any letter or refusal from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
- Real estate: the agreement of purchase and sale, your mortgage commitment and the other side’s lawyer’s details if you have them.
- Wills and estates: a list of what you own, the names of your family members, and any existing will or power of attorney.
- Corporate and commercial: the draft contract or lease, your articles of incorporation and any existing agreements between the owners.
- Every matter: government-issued photo identification, and any deadline, court date or closing date.
Is what I say confidential?
Yes. A lawyer owes a duty of confidentiality to anyone who seeks legal advice, whether or not that person goes on to hire the lawyer. We do not tell anyone that you have consulted us. See our confidentiality statement.
After the consultation
There is no obligation to hire the firm. If you decide to go ahead, we confirm in writing what we will do and how the fee is calculated, and we confirm your identity, as the Law Society requires of every lawyer who is retained. If the firm cannot act, because of a conflict or because the matter is outside our practice areas, we tell you so promptly.
Languages and accessibility
Consultations are available in English, Urdu, Punjabi and Hindi. If you need an accommodation to meet with us, tell us when you book and we will do what we reasonably can.
Common questions about consultations
Is the first consultation free?
Yes. Your first consultation is free for 15 minutes, by appointment, in any of our practice areas. If you retain the firm, we explain the fees and confirm the arrangement with you in writing before the work starts.
Do I become a client by booking a consultation?
No. The firm acts for you only after we have checked for conflicts and confirmed in writing that we will act. Until then, please do not rely on the conversation as legal advice on your whole situation.
Do I need an appointment?
Yes. Legal consultations are by appointment so that the lawyer is available and the conflict check is done before you arrive.
What if my matter is urgent?
Call and tell us the deadline, court date or closing date. We will tell you how soon the lawyer can speak with you.
Can someone come with me?
Yes. Tell the lawyer who the person is, because having someone else in the room can affect the confidentiality of what is said. The lawyer may ask to speak with you alone for part of the meeting.
What if Law Wise cannot take my case?
We tell you as soon as we know, so that you can look for another lawyer without losing time.
